Creating comprehensive interview plans

You’ve written the job description, posted it, and the first candidates are coming in. Now it’s time to interview them. The challenge is crafting insightful questions that make for a great candidate experience while also giving you the information you need to make a smart hiring decision.

Why Interview Planning Matters

Too many interviews end up being ad hoc. One manager asks about projects, another dives into hobbies, and someone else repeats the same question already asked. The result? Inconsistent evaluation, wasted time, and frustrated candidates.

A thoughtful interview plan solves this. It ensures every interviewer knows what they’re responsible for, questions are tailored to the role, and the candidate leaves feeling engaged and respected. It also helps teams compare candidates more fairly since everyone is assessed on the same dimensions. The challenge, of course, is that creating interview plans takes time…and without AI, it’s easy for teams to skip this step altogether.

Using AI to Draft an Interview Plan

To execute this, we will share our job description plan with ChatGPT and ask it to come up with an interview plan and questions for each interview based on our job description. We will want to be clear about how many interviewers will be included and any additional context we can provide. Let's use the job description we created in Write better job descriptions…faster for our fictional Social Media Manager role at Candy Mania.

Using the attached job description, create an interview plan with supporting questions for this role. We will have four interviews for this role. One by the hiring manager (Head of Marketing), the COO of the Company, the Head Chocolate Maker, and someone from HR. Each of these will be 30 minute interviews.

Once again, we can prompt AI for adjustments or edit directly. If we want to dive into specific areas (e.g., data analytics, community building) we can ask ChatGPT to better emphasize that in all the interviews. We can also ask it to be more creative in creating test assignments or work-specific scenarios to see how the candidates respond.

So What

Interview planning isn’t just about keeping things organized. It directly impacts the quality of your hires. When interviews are inconsistent, you risk overlooking strong candidates, making decisions based on incomplete information, or introducing bias into the process. A structured plan ensures every candidate has a fair shot, every interviewer has a clear role, and the team walks away with the insights needed to compare candidates effectively. By using AI to lighten the planning load, HR leaders and hiring managers can make interview prep faster and more consistent, while still delivering a thoughtful experience that strengthens the company’s reputation with candidates.
